The slip joint is an alternative interface connection in which two conical steel tubulars are placed over each other. The connection requires no bolting, grouting, or welding which decreases material costs, valuable installation time and requires no manual intervention offshore.
The connection is made by gravity and the geometrical fit of the two cones, much like two inverted coffee cups placed over each other. Loads in the connection are transferred through a combination of friction forces and hoop stresses, which effectively creates a prestressed connection.
The slip joint is a versatile, maintenance free and high-capacity connection, installed within 30 minutes. The slip joint enables floating installation and is ready for the next generation wind turbine and monopile sizes.
